いはつ【衣鉢】

〔鉢〕 a Buddhist monk's stole and begging bowl (presented to a student monk as a token of his having completed his studies); 〔奥義〕 the mysteries of an art.

●衣鉢を継ぐ 《文》 have the mysteries of one's master's art imparted to one; 《文》 assume the mantle of one's master

・衣鉢を継がせる 《文》 cast one's mantle [allow one's mantle to fall] upon sb

・彼は師の衣鉢を伝えている. 《文》 The mantle of his master has fallen upon him. | He is heir to his master's teachings.
